personality of the 20th century. Yes ! he had his faults, then which great leader has no faults ? But to say as made out by the western press that he was a ogre or a evil man is not the truth at all. Stalin was a man of steel and strong will power. To beat Hitler such a man was a requirement of history and Stalin emerged.
On my visits to Russia, I find the Russians are nostalgic about Stalin and so am I. He was a great man who created a state so powerful that it rivaled the USA. He created the Soviet Union and that nation became a counterpoise to the imperialist powers and the USA. England and France ceased to matter with Stalin around and the monolithe state he created was an effective bulwark against the west. Stalin led Russia with aplomb. His tussle with Hitler is legendary. The west would never have the war against Hitler, in case Stalin was not on their side.
The western writers rely and highlight the negative aspects of Stalin. It is as if he did nothing good. Perhaps there were some excesses under him, but in the overall scenario he had a single minded devotion and aim and that was to make Russia a global power and this he did.
One cannot forget that the Soviet union stood by India in its hour of need when the Western powers had forsaken it. How many times the Soviet union used the VETO in the security council to bale out India? Stalin was a man of his word. He made Russia strong. Its a pity that his successors failed to keep the Soviet Union together. My hats off to Stalin and I have a lurking feeling the west was happy to see him go. So long he was there the USA was reined in and if Stalin had been around the murders of Gaddafi and Saddam would never have taken place. The west will have to answer for these monstrous crimes, that unleashed the genie of Islamic terrorism on the world. Now that 62 years have passed after the demise of Stalin we can sit back and realize that he deserves the title "The Great".
