Dubai is fast becoming a playground of the Middle East. The ruling Maktoum family has opened the doors of Dubai to some of the best restaurant chains in the world. Naturally most of the really good restaurants are part of the luxury hotels and the food they serve is a culinary delight. Some o the important restaurants are discussed below.

Rhodes Mezzanine. This restaurant with a menu that is inspired by Gary Rhodes' and is a pure English menu. The restaurant is located at the Grosvenor House Hotel has carved for itself a niche in the culinary hall of fame. The seasonal menu includes items like poached sea bass, wild mushroom ravioli and old-fashioned blackberry trifle. Guests are treated to several complimentary courses including canapés on arrival and you can have an accompaniment of Devonshire clotted cream and a wide option of chocolates to choose from.

Indego. This is an Indian restaurant and it is inspired by the chef Viet Bhatia.Vineet was awarded a Michelin star for catering and is known to have opened the doors to west’s perception of Indian food. Bhatia’s menu consists of home smoked bandore salmon and pan-grilled spice crusted sea bass with tomato kadhi and coconut khichdi. One can also savor the chocolate and almond samosa served with masala tea ice cream. Located at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

Verre. This is located at the Hilton Dubai Creek. The food is defined as 'modern European cuisine' and the ambience is minimalist chic. The menu offers pithivier of quail and forest mushrooms with quail jus and castaing duck breast, confit duck leg with pearl barley risotto. The cellar stocks over 500 labels - including 250 French wines - that are hand-picked by the sommelier and restaurant manager, to enhance the entire experience. Verre made it to the World's Best Restaurants' list in 2007.

Nobu. Nobu Matsuhisa the Japanese chef has this restaurant located at the Atlantis at The Palm Jumeira, It is a Japanese theme restaurant you can have a multi-course meal. Delicacies include yellowtail with jalapeño, Nobu-style lobster with wasabi pepper sauce and his signature dish, black cod with miso.

Ronda Locatelli. This restaurant is located in Palm Jumeira, This restaurant has a rustic atmosphere and serves southern Italian menu of antipasto misto, Vitello tonnato and carpaccio served family style with the accompaniment of Italian cocktails like Bellinis and Campari and soda.
But these are the famous ones. But Dubai is also dotted with hundreds of fast food joints and cafes. You can have any type of food at all hours and times. In fact its is a 24 hour food factory. However there is a strict watch on all the restaurants as Dubai's Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection has warned restaurants to stop adding service charges to bills. This warning given in December last year was on the basis of reports that some restaurants were adding as much as 20% of the bill for the service charge. This is not as per the law in dubai.

One Rank One Pension is at Last a Reality: But its a Phyrric Sanction and Meat is Missing

Finally the contentious One Rank One Pension(OROP) demand will see the light of the day.  This is however like a dream turned sour as the saunction belies what is approved by 2 houses of parliaament.The army chief General Dilbagh Singh last year in an address to ex-servicemen at Rewari in Haryana  had  announced that OROP is approved and if all goes well the same will be put into effect before 30 April 2015.  As per reports about 17000 ex-servicemen attended the rally and  the father of general Dilbagh Singh a retired ex serviceman himself attended the rally. Unfortunately the general as usual was talking like  a wind bag and as yet the sanction is not accorded.

This demand  has been simmering for 4 decades, but it is yet not borne fruit. Though the light at the end of the tunnelm is visible.credit for this must go to General Satbir Singh Chairman of the ESI, who relentlessly represented the case of the soldiers to the BJP government. We all know that after coming to power the two power centres in the BJP, the Finance Minister Jaitley and the Raksha Mantri  Pannikar spoke in discordant voices against the OROP.

OROP is still not approved and I am afraid this will be a sour note for the soldiers fighting with their lives to save India. Its a shame and Modi and his FM Jaitley need to hang their head in shame, but then shameless people do not feel any shame.

One of the best things that have happened to Indian cricket is the Indian Premier league. This is a cricket carnival replete with entertainment. The Indian masses starved of good entertainment have loved the IPL.

After all Indian girls have won a plethora of awards in world beauty contests and thus one can safely reason that they would do a good job even as Cheer girls.

 Granted Indian girls are darker than the Europeans, but then so many colored women also dance as cheer leaders in World Series in USA. Thus I see no reason why Indian girls cannot be cheer leaders. The board could try out a mix of Indian and European girls. Well having said this I understand Sharrukh tried some Indian girls in South Africa for his team, but they performed poorly because of inhibitions. So let the girls shed their inhibitions. Its great to come out and dance in a skimpy dress, its carnival time after all.

 So I do feel in the next edition of the IPL the board may give a try to some Indian girls to cavort and dance in hot pants.  The Indian public will love it

The Maharajah and the British Empire are words that are twined together. One can wonder, that with the British Raj omnipotent, how could there be Maharajahs? Yet this is a fact of history and cannot be bypassed.

After the 1857 mutiny the rule of the East India Company ceased and the British crown became paramount. Queen Victoria in a proclamation announced that the Maharajahs and princes of India would continue in power and their privileges would remain intact. They would only be subservient to the crown.

This was a godsend for the Maharajahs who were not very popular among the masses as they had done nothing for them. The British crown articulated by Queen Victoria now had guaranteed their privileges and rule. Nothing could be better for them than this. The Rajas, Nawabs and maharajahs now got a new lease of life and for the next 100 years made merry at the cost of the tax payer and the people.

Mumbai has a fond association with the English. This is the Sewree fort in Mumbai. However though the fort is a protected monument yet the state government has done precious little for its upkeep. As it stands the Sewree fort is favorite for lovers, who kiss and cuddle in seclusion and also a den for people who have nothing to do. The halls of the fort have no roofs and children play a lot of games there. Not exactly a recipe for  a protected monument.

History of the Sewree Fort

The fort was first built by the British in the 17thcentury. It was built of stone and mortar. The English had built this fort in anticipation of a Mughul attack. Thus the British built the fort at a height of 60meters above the sea level and it was landlocked on 3 sides. The fort came up in 1680 and was a source of English power in the region. However in 1689 the fort was attacked and captured by one Sardar named Yakub Khan Siddiqui of the Mughul emperor Aurangzeb.

Yakub Khan continued his victorious drive and captured the entire stretch all around up to Mazgaon. But after the death of Aurangzeb and the decline of the Mughul Empire the British re established their power. In 1768 it was re captured back by the British and remained with them till the dawn of independence. Yakub khan had badly damaged the fort and the British spent considerable time and money and repaired the fort.

The Fort as a British Prison

The British then began to use the fort as a prison for their opponents. In fact in 1789 they held Sardar Mokal of Malabar in this fort. But history records that Sardar Mokal escaped and the English had no clue how he ran away. But they felt the fort to be unsafe as a prison and converted the halls of the fort into a warehouse.
Present Position
After Independence the fort was taken over by the Mumbai Port trust who continued using it as a warehouse. Thefort further went into decline. In 1976 there were plans to construct a housing colony here. However a media outcry did the trick and the fort was declared a protected monument and taken over by the government. however it could still do with a face lift.
