A Book on Werewolves by Patricia Briggs-Fair Game

Patricia Briggs is a famous American author. She is a writer of fantasy novels and has been writing since 1993. She has created a fantasy series of novels known as the Mercy Thompson fantasy series. These novels are set in an urban back ground in the United States. Briggs is 48 years old having been born in 1965. She published her first novel ‘Masques’ in 1993 and has followed up with many more.

Most of Briggs characters are sheer fantasy, sometimes bordering on the absurd. A reader is hard put to visualize the tales written by her as having any realism. Briggs makes an attempt to get reader attention by presenting a bizarre and unrealistic scenario. Her novel ‘Fair Game’ can be classified as a fantasy and presents werewolves in human garb. These werewolves have now revealed themselves and are a part and parcel of everyday life in the United States. One can appreciate a fantasy, but to write about a subject where werewolves are accepted by human beings and organizations like the FBI will tax the imagination of the reader. As per the writer the werewolves have now as a clan revealed themselves to humans. In ‘Fair Game’, The FBI approaches two werewolves to help solve some mysterious killings in Boston. The two werewolves are Anna Latham and Charles Cornick. These two werewolves are in love. Charles is the dominant werewolf, while Anna has a quality of being able to calm other werewolves. The FBI is unable to solve the mysterious killings and these two werewolves help out. As they investigate they find that the persons killed are werewolves and it dawns on the duo that somebody is targeting persons who are werewolves. This lends urgency to their efforts to track the killer. The killer now targets the two werewolves Charles and Anna, who themselves are in great danger. This is supposed to be a thrilling tale, but many readers will find the entire theme of the novel implausible and reading it would mean entering into a fantasy world which just cannot exist. One reads fantasies, but to read a fantasy as a real time action novel is bound to tax the imagination of any reader. Patricia Briggs does try and present a thriller. The plot is racy and the book is eminently readable. If a reader can forget about the absurdity of the plot, he or she may well be able to enjoy the book. All one has to think is that it is a fantasy. Briggs has latched on to the American fascination for werewolves and created an entire series of books on the subject. Generally such fantasies have a momentary moment of glory and then fade away. Patricia Briggs was born in Butte, Montana, USA. She has during her life time lived in many cities in the North West of the USA. Presently she resides in Washington State. Her first novel ’Masques’ was not a success, but it has been re-issued again. Some of her books notably Blood Bound and Iron Kissed have been on the New York Times best seller lists.

Tamil Girls and Fairness

A look at the Tamil screen shows that the heroines are fair skinned. I have yet to see a dark skinned heroine on the south Indian screen. Even Jayalalita when she was a star is milky white in complexion. These milky white complexioned stars contribute to a beauty culture in South India where skin-whitening creams outsell Coca-Cola. Yet the fact is that most Tamil and south Indian girls are dark complexioned. I wonder why a dark complexioned girl cannot strike out in the Tamil film industry. One aspect that is overlooked is that the ancient scriptures, epics, or folk tales in Tamil or for that matter in any Indian language, the good character is always portrayed as being fair in complexion. A beautiful princess is always without fail described as being fair and white as snow. This is a dangerous portrayal as it is suggesting that the fair are fair dealing and the dark complexioned has evil intentions. This view has been expressed by Shyamala Bhatia, an associate professor in history at the Bharati College, University of Delhi. If you add that the white race ruled India and their women were white than it becomes clear why the concept of fairness being superior is embedded deep within the Indian psyche. But even after the white rulers went away, India‘s concepts of beauty has not changed. Thus milky-complexioned Tamil stars to a massive market for skin lightening creams, the notion that white means beautiful is all pervading in South India. The word for fairness in Hindi is “GORI” and in Tamil it is நேர்மை Nērmai. I am afraid it will not go from the South Indian psyche. I will close with a small anecdote. I had been called to give a guest lecture to students on the Law in Madras University. After the lecture I expected to be asked questions about the legal aspects of the lecture. Unfortunately all the girls surrounded me asked me what I did to keep my skin fair. I was non plussed,as I don’t do anything and I am as I am.

France on the Back Foot on Submarine Deal of US and UK with Australia

Why did France recall its ambassadors to the U.S. and Australia? This is a manifestation of big power politics and also the bruised ego of France. Let us understand that France had signed a submarine deal with Australia. These were conventional submarines but the deal appears to have been considerably delayed. In any case France was going to earn close to $60 billion.

Once the United States and the UK decided to confront China they needed a frontline partner in the Pacific Ocean and hence chose Australia because it is still having strings to the United Kingdom and recognizes the queen as its head. In other words it's part of the Anglo-Saxon crowd. Obviously the French suffered badly because the deal which the Americans and the British gave to Australia was for nuclear submarines a technology which the Americans have not shared only with one other country in the world during the last 60 years and that is the UK. This is the second country they will be sharing nuclear technology; thus France was taken out of the loop of big power politics and made to look like a small bird on the global stage. At the same time the realization dawned on the French that they are not part of the global power scenario therefore France decided to show its displeasure by recalling it's Ambassador from Australia and USA but it is not going to help anyway.

America is Facing Push and Pull Theory of Migration

Why have thousands of migrants gathered at the US-Mexico border?

Migration is something that has been going on since the dawn of history. One of the most famous theories of migration is the ‘push and pull’ theory. This means that migrants normally go to places which are economically better off looking for a better life. Now let us understand that life in the United states is much better then those living on the borders of the USA or nearby countries, so it is natural that people will gravitate to enter the USA. That is the reason that thousands of migrants have gathered at US- Mexico border wanting to enter America for a better life. This is part of history and I do not think Americans will be able to stop it totally. Why? because America is a nation of migrants and it's a huge country almost six times the size of India with a population which is 1/4 of India and thus is fertile ground for migration.

Why can't India manufacture bullet trains?

I have flown Supersonics and I can tell you that India cannot manufacture a 5th generation fighter jet. Similarly India does not have the technology nor the money to back R and D to manufacture bullet train. The basic components are the avionics and the power plant which has to be tested in wind tunnel.India just has no expertise in this field and even if India starts now it will be at least two decades behind China and Japan and the technology which we will produce will be obsolete. The problem with India is that in 1948 India had a more advanced basic industry then China where not even a bicycle was made but China by building infrastructure and basic ingredient of science has taken a lead and the bullet train and the fifth generation Fighter the Chengdu is Chinese achievement. India will have to thank Pandit Nehru for being the leggard in the world.

Repercussions of the American Retreat:Nations on China's Rim Worried

What about security against Chinese misadventures? Can the countries on China'a rim trust the USA? We must look at this problem from a proper perceptive. The fact is by retreating from from Afghanistan, the credibility of the USA is now zero and most of the countries on the rim of China are not sure that Americans can stand with them and that is a fact. I had some reports by some people which have gone to the extent of saying that Biden has done all this at the behest of China because we should not forget that the United States maintains 30,000 troops in Korea and another 50,000 in Germany. I have yet to understand what purposes they are serving but he was not ready to keep even 3000 troops in Afghanistan which would have stopped a Taliban victory. This is food for thought, as one thing is very clear that China will not be confronted by the USA. There is also a possibility that someone in the American hierarchy was hand in glove with the Taliban in China because the retreat has been so chaotic that one cannot understand how the Americans left all their weapons behind and just ran away like rats running away from a sinking ship

How powerful would you consider the USA under Biden's administration?

This is a loaded question and I will give it an answer which is not run-of-the-mill. The first thing we must remember is that when Biden took over as president, the virus had abated and hence he had the luck with him and things began to improve. However overall he has let America down by trying to mollycoddle Iran and also try and placate China mainly because some of the biggest American corporations have invested billions of dollars in China. In world history rarely, the leader of a nation been taking pecuniary benefits from the enemy and we all know that Hunter Biden and Biden himself are beholden to China. This is a sure shot recipe for disaster and perhaps Biden will preside over the demise of the American empire. He has also put the nail in the American prestige and influence bya chaotic retreat from Afghanistan. Rarely have we sen sucha disorderly retreat in world history. Napoleon also retreated from Moscow but it was aorder ly retreat. In the American case they just ran away leaving weapons worth almost $800 billion for use by the Taliban. There escape from Bagram air base in the dead of the night will always be something no American can stomach and face the world. Joe BIden is thus the man to preside over the demise of America as a global force.

Terror Attack-in-Kabul-Tale of us Inaptitude

Two days back I got up in the morning and saw the headline news that 13 US soldiers and another hundred local Afghans have been killed in a terrorist bomb attack. This attack has been attributed to ISIS. Joe Biden the US president made a bombastic speech that he would not forget this attack and take revenge I recollect a similar speech had been made by George Bush after the twin tower attack in New York but the net result has been that the US has retreated and shaken the hands of the very people who had been accused of terrorism and the US had declared it a terrorist organization. There is a certain amount of irony in all this and the fact is that the US has basically abdicated its responsibility as the leader of the world.

As a student of Military History I had expected this attack in Kabul and I am very sure some more attacks will take place against the US all over the world particularly in the Islamic countries. By throwing in the towel and negotiating a piece Donald Trump followed by Biden has let the free world down and it is the first time history will record that democracy lost and terrorism won. We are ordinary citizens and what we can do? All we can do is to vent our anger in blogs. That is about all because the fact remains the Americans have no longer the will to fight.

My Mustang

T

he word Mustang conjures up an image of a wild horse. These are very abundant in the canyons of America and are associated with speed and power. The Ford design team in the sixties when thinking of a name for their "muscle car" hit upon the Mustang as a name for it. The car made its debut and set the auto charts on fire. Now six decades have passed and the iconic car is still very much in production and sells in good numbers all over the world. The car is introduced in India and for those who are interested to know or buy one, costs Rs 95 lakhs on the road in Mumbai. I purchased a Mustang, about 3 years back and have been using it since then. Its a convertible model and the roof can be pulled back for an exhilarating drive. Mind you at anything above 150 MPH with the roof pulled down can be like adrenalin in the blood. The Mustang has been christened as the original " Muscle Car" by auto enthusiasts. This is because of the immense power it packs under the hood. It is available in two engine specifications namely the V-6 and V-8 which means 6 and 8 cylinders. The V-8 has an output of 396 BHP and a top speed of 200 MPH. I have personally driven the Mustang at 180 MPH and the car just breezed away without the trace of a ripple. The car comes both as a convertible and a coupe and has only two doors. The model introduced in India is a coupe and the pleasure of driving with the roof pulled down cannot be savored. The Mustang is a low slung car and once you get in the driver's seat one will get the idea that you are hugging the road. This is inevitable, as its a racing car and the designers have designed it to keep the drag -coefficient low. The car has a six-speed automatic transmission that apart from a high BHP of over 300 and develops torque at 280@ 4000 RPM. The automatic transmission is a must for such a car so that the driver can concentrate on just handling the car and not worry about changing gears. The car I own has 18-inch alloy wheels and manual AC. Frankly, if the hood is pulled up you don't need any air conditioning, as the wind whistles around your ear. The bucket seats are very comfortable and can seat 4 adults. The car has a cruising speed of about 100MPH but sadly you can't run the car at that speed in India, except perhaps on the Pune-Panvel freeway. Maybe the Agra -Delhi freeway also. But you can still cruise around the city as it has an extremely powerful engine and the drive is effortless and will certainly make the eyes of the people turn, more so if you have an attractive passenger in the front with you. Lastly yes, the Mustang is an excellent advertisement for the owner to latch on to a good looking girl for company. The Mustang is one of the flagship cars from America and shows that the American auto industry remains the best in the world.

India has to Settle with China and Stop Living in a fools World

Should India appease China, or should it have an aggressive policy? Due to decades of neglect from the time of Nehru and subsequent leaders, India is militarily weak against China and is unable to take an aggressive stand. India has to except reality and putting forward a claim over an area where Indian never had any control is not a good thing. I am referring to Aksai Chin where India had no administration or police at any time. It is about time India faced the crunch. There is no choice but to have a settlement with China on their terms for the simple reason that militarily India does not have the capability to throw the Chinese even 1 mile back. It is time for Modi to bite the bullet. What does it mean? It means the border settlement with China, maybe on China's terms; I don't see any other option to it.

Why Napoleon Burned Moscow in 1812

Napoleon's campaign of 1812 is a classic example of a failed military campaign.

In this battle the aim of Napoleon was to bring Russia to its knees so that he could remain the dominent power in Europe. Unfortunately Napoleon’s strategy was wrong and he decided to concentrate on marching on Moscow which was not desirable. He expected the Russians to make peace and come for a meeting with him as he neared Moscow, as had been the case in battles at other places in Europe. However the Russians did not give in to him with the result in anger and short of supplies and food for his troops he decided to burn Moscow. In real fact it was a blunder of great magnitude because he burned all his bridges to Russia and had no option but to retreat and there were no supplies and food for his army. With the result the grand army which was almost 600,000 was decimated.

World Yoga Day

Yoga is as old as Indian history. It traces its origin to a hoary past and much of the knowledge has come down from word of mouth. However ancient Indian yogis who had mastered the art of yoga were supposed to have developed supernatural and ESP once they had mastered the intricacies of yoga. This regimen consists of poses that include standing on the head . Tese poses also called asanas;has to be done under the guidance of a master and one must never try and do these poses on one's own. a guru is a must.In the 20th century, many India masters like swamuBharti, Swami Shrafddanand, Mahesh yogi and Acharya Rajneesh taught yoga as well its meditation aspects to the west. Two years back the Indian government under Narendra Modi decided to put yoga on the global scene and a concerted effort was made to publicize yoga and its benefits to the world. Yoga as it stood, was already popular in the world and the UNO readily consented to incorporate it as a global event and thus marked 21st June as world yoga day. It has been celebrated with great gusto in Ney york where thousands have gathered in madison square to do mass yogic asanas as well as chant the yogic hymns. One must understand that yoga has not only an exercise or physical aspect but also a meditation and spiritual aspect. Though the government in India has delinked the two, yet advanced yoga at a later stage becomes one with the spiritual aspect of yoga and leads a human being to the path of enlightenment. Yoga has a king asana called the head stand and it is said by yogis that in case a man does the headstand consistently then at some stage the spermatozoa of the male will trickle to the brain down the spine and a yogi will develop ESP. One Yogi visiting the USa in a Laboratory baffled scientists by maintaining different temperatures in both his hands. Something that could not be explained as one hand was much hotter than the other. The yogi claimed he had mastered this through yogic asanas. It is good the world has recognized Yoga as a disciple and it is the credit of India that yoga has originated from this mighty land. Now even Muslim women have accepted the Yoga asanas and the way is only forward now

Donald Trump: First Man to identify source of terror in the world.

Over the past years many terrorist attacks are taking place. One can recollect the terrorist attacks which were inhuman. In one of the most reprehensible incidents an old 85-year-old French priest was killed with a knife by a Jihadist who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State. The French declared an extension of the state of emergency but did not explicitly stated that the attack is motivated by Islamic fundamentalism. The same thing has happened in Germany. many attacks by extremist lone wolf Muslim migrants has led to revulsion and made the German people think. But Angela Merkel has not identified the source of these attacks as inspired by Muslim extremism. There is thus a marked reluctance to name Islam as a source of terror. The reasons for this are myriad, but lurking behind is the fear that any identification of Islam as a source of terror may create greater bloodshed.

Views of Trump

Donald Trump was President but he lost the last election.He may have lost but he was a different kettle of fish as can be made out by his statements. He differed from the Democratic party whose leaders hesitated to single out Islam as a motivating force for terror attacks.

Donald Trump as president to the chagrin of many clearly stated that Muslims are the source of terror, the world over. He also had praised Saddam Hussein as a man who knew how to deal with Muslim extremists like Al Qaeda. Donald mentioned that Saddam did not read the rule book to the terrorists, but simply hanged them. He was an efficient killer of terrorists. Earlier Donald had said the world was a better place when Gaddafi and Saddam were around. I don't think he can be faulted for this as things in the Middle East were certainly better when the duo of Gadafi and Saddam was around.

Donald also stated that he would take on Islamic fundamentalism head-on. He would debar Muslims from entering the USA till they proved their bonafide's. He would also take the battle to the sanctuaries of the extremists and destroy them. He would mete out the same treatment to the Muslim extremists or Jihadists as they meted out to their non-Muslim prisoners. These are strong statements and many in the USA were against this rhetoric, but the common American identified with Donald.

The future

Nobody can forecast the future. Donald has lost and Biden is president.

However, Trump raised cogent issues and like or dislike, what he has stated cannot be brushed under the carpet. Many claimed Trump was a man with little knowledge and some even have referred to him as a buffoon. This is a sad commentary on the American people and means that half the American people support a buffoon? Not likely and this propaganda must be shelved as unworthy of a reply. All said and done, Donald was the first man in the west to identify the source of terror, and that by itself is not a mean feat.

Sex and abduction crimes are too many in USA

America is the land of milk and honey and every educated Indian wants to go to the "new world" and settle there.  Many are a now bit wary of the prevalence of crime particularly with regard to abductions, kidnappings for sex which now dominate the scene. The worst part of this entire scene is that tens of such crimes go undetected, which is a sad commentary on the efficacy of the FBI and the local US police. It is unfortunate that the FBI which is the nodal agency for interstate crimes like kidnapping and abduction is unable to trace girl victims for years. One wonders as to how an agency with the latest gadgetry is unable to detect such crimes. One could perhaps accept this with a pinch of salt, but the fact that so many girls are missing for years is, to say the least preposterous.

A look at some of the crimes makes sad reading. There was the case of a man, a Hispanic who kidnapped 3 girls and kept them in a small dungeon under his house. The girls were kept secluded as they were used to pleasure the man and he also fathered a child from one of them. The worst thing was that the girls have been kept in a house a little distance from where they were abducted. Only after the passing of a few years one of the girls could escape from the underground chamber and alert the police, who raided the house and arrested the man. What a travesty of the police word, as such an elite force could not discover the girls who were just a few hundred yards from where they were kidnapped. The police have a lot to answer, but in America, nobody is asking any questions of the police and I don't find any NGO or other group posting any questions to the police. This is not an isolated incident, but there are tens of such cases.

 Reminds me of another case where a 13-year-old  was given to a man as compensation for financial favors and he also kept her and another girl for years till a neighbor alerted the police. All have been arrested including the mother of the girl. One wonders whether the police have a mechanism to check houses or only believe in driving around the roads in swank cars or Harley Davidson bikes on the road. They are trigger happy, but their detection of crime is, to say the least poor.

One problem that confronts America is race and the police are severe on the black man, but a white is likely to getaway. This is because the US police have racial blinkers. Yet, the rape cases are the highest in the world and so are abductions and kidnappings for sex. Many whites do it and get away for years till the law catches up with them. There needs to be a focused investigation by the police and I have a feeling that after a few months, a kidnapped girl's case remains on file as the police go after newer cases. Thus so many kidnappings go unsolved, which does not speak highly of a professional force.

 Considering that the US has the largest instances of rape in the world, this apathy, and low criminal convictions is again something that has to be explained. Perhaps the approach of the public also needs to change as can be seen by a sentence of 6 months jail for a man. It turned out that the boy was a champion swimmer and that was a condoning factor, which again is very sad.   The boy was raping an unconscious girl on the roadside, till passers by apprehended him.I think such cases and convictions contribute more to the crime scene in the US. This apathy towards rapists and kidnappers has in a way percolated to the police and the result is more unsolved crimes. The case usually becomes just a number in the record books, but the girl's life is irretrievably destroyed.

It is about time the US police and public did some soul searching and streamlined their procedures and actions. Let's see if there will be a change, but I doubt it.
